Police Scotland Driver Engagement

Eight members spent an fascinating morning today with Police Scotland. Martin and Neil from the Dingwall traffic department brought along the Police Scotland driving simulator for members to test their skills. They started with an interesting presentation highlighting the problems of older drivers. They showed that the number of fatal accidents in the Highland area involving older drivers had significantly increased over the years to 2018/19. The figures for the last few years during and after COVID will be lower due to a decrease in journeys undertaken in that period. Most of these accidents were due to medical conditions particularly failing eyesight.

It was pointed out that it is up to the individual to inform the DVLA of changes in their health which may affect their driving ability and is not the responsibility of medical professionals. So please be aware that if your health is affecting your driving it is your duty to inform the DVLA.

Following the presentation each member was given an opportunity to try out the driving simulator which was a very absorbing few minutes. An excellent morning and the only thing missing was the potholes!
