Archive Centre Visit

THE INVERNESS SHED ‘FRIENDSHIP GROUP’ at the ARCHIVE CENTRE.
This happy bunch of gentlemen enjoyed a morning’s visit to the Archive Centre today (19/10/23) and were given a guided tour of the large building by Lorna. Her enthusiasm and knowledge was incredible and we learnt so much from her over the 2 hour tour. Apart from getting hints about researching family trees, we went behind the scenes, where the general public do not normally venture and visited the Conservator. Here the many books etc that are received into the vast collections are examined, possibly repaired and given an important, overall ‘health check’ before being placed within the ‘population’ held. We also had access to the strong room, which houses thousands of original and valuable books and miscellaneous documentation in a room which has a constant temperature of 16 degrees. There is also an underground water connection to the river Ness should the Fire Service need access, in the event of fire. A sloping floor then results in any water used, running off with hopefully minimal damage resulting. Should this large building become full to the brim, then land adjacent to the Centre is available to extend the facility. There was so much of interest to be seen that many of the group intend to return under their own steam. If any Shed members are interested then I’d recommend a visit. You will find a team of very helpful and knowledgeable people working there and the whole set up will amaze you. This is a building of some quality, as are the staff working there and Inverness can be proud of the overall service it provides not only to Highlanders or Scots even but to visitors from all over the world and Wick!
